Returning to Our "Why"

Returning to Our "Why"

A decade ago, when we first looked at the abandoned, blighted buildings lining the streets of Allison Hill, we didn’t just see cracked brick and overgrown lots, we saw a canvas for hope. Our vision was fueled by a simple, urgent prayer: How can we uncover the beauty of this community hidden within these broken, forgotten structures?

In those early days, our resources were small but our resolve was massive. The best we could do was board up empty windows and doors, and clear away mounds of debris to push back against crime and create safer pockets for our neighbors. Yet, even as we hammered those boards into place, we knew that securing a problem wasn't the same as solving it. We weren't just called to shield our community from the dark; we were called to build spaces filled with light.

Now, 10 years later, that persistent faith is turning into concrete reality. We are officially breaking ground on our very first affordable housing development. We are finally taking those empty lots and transforming them into actual homes, spaces of absolute safety, dignity, and true belonging for our neighbors.

As we hit this milestone, we look back to the very heart of why Wildheart was born. We do this work because behind the statistics of the housing crisis are the sacred stories of our neighbors, stories that demand to be heard:

The Invisible Struggles: We carry the memory of the immigrant couple on Crescent Street who lived without running water, their quiet perseverance completely unseen by the outside world. We remember the homes with walls literally giving way, places so hazardous most wouldn’t dare enter, yet neighbors called them home.

The Heartbreak of Displacement: We remember the families we loved who were forced to leave Allison Hill simply because safe housing didn't exist. Their hearts were rooted here, but they had no choice but to pack up and leave the community they cherished.

The Cycle of Instability: We think of mothers like Anna, a single mom of three, moving from rent to rent, navigating landlord challenges, and constantly searching for a steady foundation where her children can truly plant roots and thrive.

The Sudden Tragedies: We remember our teen intern, Alizon, whose home was stolen by a devastating fire, forcing 15 family members to crowd into a three-bedroom house with no backyard or safe green space for the children to just run and play.

Redevelopment projects like The Gateway are so much more than construction efforts, they are literal lifelines.

Ten years ago, we were just trying to protect the block. Today, we have the breathtaking opportunity to change the trajectory of a family's life for generations. We are no longer just offering temporary shelter; we are building beautiful, permanent homes for our community to own. This is about restoring permanent safety, keeping families rooted where they belong, and unlocking the kind of generational wealth and stability that Allison Hill has always deserved.

By creating safe, truly affordable housing, we are handing families like Alizon’s, Anna’s, and their neighbors the security, dignity, and future that is their absolute birthright.

Every single unit we build is a promise kept. Every home we secure is a future restored. Thank you for walking with us for 10 years, the foundation is laid, and we are just getting started.
