Healing in Hotlanta
Have you ever been challenged to pray a specific prayer?
Last year on the Burn Wagon, I was a part of the Southeast team. On our route we stopped in Atlanta, Georgia, or as some people call it Hotlanta, and it definitely lived up to its name. This particular morning we had gathered in the church where we would be leading worship on Sunday morning. Our team leader, Russell, was leading us in a morning devotional. He was talking about being more specific in our prayers. So, before we went out to do ministry that day I prayed a simple, yet specific prayer that went something like this:
“Lord, today I want to see someone's leg grow out, someone experience the power of the Holy Spirit like electricity in their body and someone be healed, not only physically but emotionally and spiritually. Oh and if there is any way for us to play volleyball today that would be great as well. Amen”
We piled into the van and headed out for our day of ministry. Our first destination was Piedmont Park. It was a Saturday so there were quite a few people out. We grabbed our instruments and went to find a shaded area to start worshiping. Our leaders told us to partner up and begin to pray for people in the park. Ben, one of our team leaders, began to play guitar so I sat down and started singing and playing djembe. While I was sitting there, I was asking the Lord to highlight some people He wanted me to pray with. I noticed a group of women in the field and I knew that I was supposed to go over there. I grabbed my teammate, Alison, and we made our way over to the field.
We approached the women and struck up a conversation with them. They were just out having a fun day in the sun. It was definitely a beautiful day. The first woman we talked to was one of their leaders, Susan*. We told her how we had been traveling around the Southeast praying for people and telling them about Jesus. One of the women overheard us talking about praying for people to be healed. She shouted over to us that Susan needed prayer for her knee. We asked Susan if we could pray for her knee and she said yes. We prayed and God healed her right there. She began walking around the park and said that her knee hadn’t felt that good in a long time. The Lord healed her!
Some of the other ladies saw what had happened to Susan and asked us to come over and pray for them. Alison and I walked over to a couple of ladies sitting in their lawn chairs. Rebecca* and Mary* had watched us pray with Susan and Rebecca wanted Jesus to heal her too. She had been having some pain in her back. We prayed and Rebecca said she felt this electricity shoot through her body. She stood up and tested out the area where she had previously experienced pain. She was completely healed!
There was a new woman in the program sitting near Rebecca and Mary and they asked her if she wanted us to pray with her too. Laura* had just started the program a few months ago and was having a hard time. She told us some of her story of heartbreak and addiction. We began to pray with her and I really felt like the Lord began the process of healing her emotionally and physically from the addiction to heroin.
Another woman named Jane* walked up to us and asked if we could pray for her as well. She had been dealing with some stomach issues and the doctors had recently told her that she had liver cancer. So, we began to pray. Jane was really moved and began crying during the prayer. She later told us that while we were praying she had felt a warmth, pain and then nothing! We all believe that Jane received a healing that day.
Last, but certainly not least, was a lady named Nikki*. She was born with scoliosis which caused her hips to be out of place. I asked her if she wanted Jesus to grow her leg out. She said yes and we went over to the stairs. She sat down and we measured her legs side by side. Her left leg was shorter, so we began to pray and asked Jesus to grow it out. As we prayed, her leg began to move and at the end of the prayer, it was lined up perfectly with her right leg. She stood up and walked around and said that was the first time in her life that she had walked without pain! Jesus healed her too!
I walked away from that moment in awe of who God is and how much he loves us. He sent Jesus to heal this broken world and he wants to do it through us. Before we left the park that day Rebecca and Mary came to tell us that leading up to this they had watched the Holy Ghost movie and couldn’t believe that people did that sort of thing in real life. The Lord heard their prayers and sent us to confirm that this thing IS real and He loves to heal and restore all things!
As we walked across the park I noticed a sand volleyball court! Another prayer answered! Alison and I were able to play for a little bit before we piled into the van to leave.
This day on the Burn Wagon superseded my expectations by far! As we walked to the van, I was reminded that the Lord had answered every single one of my specific requests and it was all for His glory.
I love how the amplified version puts Ephesians 3:20-21:
“Now to Him who is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly more than all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever. Amen.”
This is a promise from God to us.He wants to carry out His purpose through you because his Spirit lives within you! Will you partner with Him this summer and join one of our Burn Wagon teams? God wants to use you to bring his hope, light, and love to our nation!
